3️⃣ tips for stopping your back pain when lifting or carrying your kiddos 📣

1. Squat and power up with your legs 💪
Avoid leaning over and pulling up with your back.

2. Get close to your kiddo before lifting.
Avoid stretching your arms out and picking up your kiddo when their body isn’t close to yours. This puts more strain and pressure on your low back.

3. Set a strong foundation.
Ideally, feet are about shoulder distance apart on a firm surface prior to starting the lift or pick up.

As a Physical Therapist, here are 3 things I do to help reduce their pain and improve their function…

1. Strengthen the muscles around the back and shoulder blades
(Think shoulder rows, lat pull downs, band pull apart, bear crawl, wall push up +, planks, side planks)

2. Open the chest musculature
(Think doorway chest stretch, open book stretch)

3. Work on spinal mobility
(Think, thread the needle, supine spinal twist)

1. Down Dog with bent knees x 3-5 breaths
Targets the soleus muscle in the calf

2. Traditional Down Dog with knees straight x 3-5 breaths
Targets the gastrocnemius muscle, also in the calf, and the hamstrings.

3. Walk the dog x 3-5 cycles
