Most of you may not think of a physical therapist

Most of you may not think of a physical therapist when you think about getting a good nights rest 🤔

However, restorative sleep is a critical component of healing following an injury or surgery.
Sleep is also vital to your overall well-being, function, productivity, and mood.

For women in their 40s and 50s, sleep disturbances may present themselves as hormone levels change in perimenopause and menopause.

Here are 3 holistic tips I give my clients struggling with sleep:

1. Move your body daily 🏃‍♀️
Morning sunlight and movement are ideal to help set your circadian rhythm.

2. Set a consistent bed time, even on the weekends, just like you did for your kiddos when they were little ⏰
This strategy also helps set your internal sleep clock.

3. Create a sleep-inducing space 🛌
Lower the thermostat for a cooler room.
Invest in quality sheets, pillows and mattress to optimize comfort.
Darken the room, use blackout curtains if needed, to cue the body for sleep.

Toileting Hygiene Tips to limit pain, bladder dysfunction and protect your pelvic floor!

💦 Sit down fully with your feet planted on the ground. This allows your pelvic floor muscles to relax.
💦 Breathe deeply.
Notice fluids naturally moving on your inhales and exhales without added pushing or straining.
💦 Average time between restroom breaks should be every 2- 4 waking hours.
💦 Holding too long between breaks can be just as damaging as going too often or “just in case.”

It’s the first tip or trick reel in my new series to celebrate PT month. Stay tuned all month for loads of free tips and education from your local Physical Therapist.

Specialized PTs trained in dry needling application *CAN* utilize dry needling for scar tissue management.

At Balanced PT and Wellness, I use a combination of hands-on work, cupping, and dry needling to treat cesarean section scars.

This treatment can
⚡️ reduce scar sensitivities
⚡️ improve scar tissue mobility
⚡️ improve the appearance of the scar
⚡️ reduce the “c-section shelf”
⚡️ decrease pain

To start this treatment, your scar needs to be completely closed, with no openings or drainage, to reduce the risk of infection. This is usually around 6 to 8 weeks following your cesarean section. And, this treatment is still beneficial for anyone struggling with pain or function, even years after baby!

3️⃣ tips for stopping your back pain when lifting or carrying your kiddos 📣

1. Squat and power up with your legs 💪
Avoid leaning over and pulling up with your back.

2. Get close to your kiddo before lifting.
Avoid stretching your arms out and picking up your kiddo when their body isn’t close to yours. This puts more strain and pressure on your low back.

3. Set a strong foundation.
Ideally, feet are about shoulder distance apart on a firm surface prior to starting the lift or pick up.
